How it works
Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a license to produce in The Bakehouse?

Yes. You will need to obtain a shared-kitchen user license through the Allegheny County Health Department (we will help you). Batches Bakehouse maintains our own master food establishment license and each member tenant must obtain and maintain their own shared-use license.

What does the process to become a member look like?

Once you fill out our inquiry form, we will reach out via email with more information on our kitchen and policies as well as any follow-up questions about your business and goals (so make sure to check your spam folder and add bakehousepgh@gmail.com to your important contacts!). We will then discuss expectations and your needs as a business to ensure we can accommodate you, as well as offer a tour of the kitchen if you would like one. We will then discuss how many hours per month and any other add-ons your business needs and you'll be provided with your own contact. Once you execute and return your contract, you will be provided with the documents and information necessary to get your health department license.

What do I need to submit my application for my license?

Just a few important things! You need the following to submit your application to the Health Dept.: LLC filing (certificate of organization) from the PA Department of State (or just your personal identifying info if you are not operating as a business), Sales Use Tax license from the PA Department of Revenue, your sample menu, written process(es) for producing your goods, Agreement Letter (provided by us), a copy of our current license, equipment list (provided by us), and a Serve Safe Food Safety Manager certification (within 30 days of obtaining your license).

What hours am I able to access the kitchen?

The Bakehouse is open to its members 24/7!

Am I allowed to increase my hours per month after I sign the contract?

Of course! As long as we believe you will be able to use the hours (i.e. we have the capacity), you can increase your hours. (One o ur goals is for businesses to be able to grow and need to use more time to accommodate their growing audiences!)

Am I allowed to offer wholesale and offer items with cream cheese and other TCS foods if I bake it at Batches?

Yes! Unlike a limited food establishment or cottage (in-home) bakery, our users are not restricted on the items they can produce and sell. If you have any questions about your specific menu, our health inspector is always happy to help!
